“Recently I attended a conference at MIT dealing with the level of political engagement of students in universities — where they said that 20 years ago it was a big deal if somebody above the age of 35 entered the room to debate political issues. Today, it’s a big deal if somebody below 35 enters the room for such a debate. So, the downside, as I see it, is that due to the huge pressure placed on success and career planning, the ability of the students to see and understand society at large has diminished. The awards of being politically active are not great. Therefore, political awareness has been de-emphasized. There are certainly active movements but, particularly in the U.S., people tend not to engage unless they are affected personally. As educators and researchers, we must not only stress the importance of involvement, but also understand that in today’s socio-political landscape the inclination toward activism cannot be assumed. It must be carefully cultivated.”
